Jim Bower, executive director and CEO of the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley since 1999, has been a dedicated community volunteer since 1968 when, as a Stanford economics student (graduated in 1970), he founded a tutorial program for over 200 students. From 1970 to 1991, Jim was a marketing and public affairs executive for Pacific Bell, working extensively in market planning, research, promotions, advertising, finance, government and media relations with assignments in San Francisco and Northern California before becoming Central Coast Regional Director. In 1991, Jim founded Marketing Communications, a private board development and marketing firm. Their over 80 clients included cities, counties, public libraries, school districts, nonprofits, and private businesses, helping raise millions of dollars throughout California. Since September 1999, Jim has guided the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley, growing the staff from 23 to 60, increasing annual income by over 400%. Greg Brown is currently Director of Education at the Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT). RAFT is a non-profit organization that provides creative hands-on activities, educational resources, workshops and inexpensive materials, (many donated by local businesses), to enrich pre K-12 education and community group programs. Prior to RAFT, Greg was a member of the creative team that founded The Tech Museum of Innovation. Over his 14 year career at The Tech, Greg managed virtually all aspects of the organization, including exhibit development, in-kind fundraising, volunteer recruitment, engineering, operations, information technology, on-line services, strategic planning, government relations, and exhibit sales. Greg started his engineering career at the FMC Corporate Technology Center . At this high-tech Silicon Valley R&D center, Greg managed 45 engineers and scientists who performed leading edge work in robotics, computer simulation, human factors, software development, video, and graphic design. Greg holds two degrees from Stanford University, and is a Registered Professional Engineer. Robert "Rob-Bob" Ceglinski is working as a Hosting and Operations Tools Engineer with Adaptive Planning. He has held most positions in the software development industry in his 20+ years in the Bay Area since college. He is the Technology Chair for the Host Committee for Intel ISEF 2010 in San Jose and was invited to sit on the Board of Directors. Rob-Bob, with his wife Pamela, are also part of the permanent Display & Safety Committee based through The Society for Science and the Public (SSP) in Washington, DC since the Phoenix fair in 2005. Rob-Bob was also the D&S Chair for the Host Committee for Intel ISEF 2001 San Jose and was asked to repeat this role in Intel ISEF 2002 Louisville. Having boycotted his 8th grade science fair, this is his come-upance. Dr. Pamela Ceglinksi has served with the International Science and Engineering Fairs since 2001 and she serves on the Permanent Display and Safety Committee for the Society for Science and the Public. She has spent the last 25 years working in and managing finance and technical support departments for enterprise applications vendors. Dr. Ceglinski received a doctorate in History from Stanford University and has lectured at Stanford, Mills College, and at the University of California Berkeley. Dana Ditmore is the CEO/Executive Director of the International Science and Engineering Fair 2010 Association. Mr. Ditmore has also served as President of Oak Valley Consulting, Inc., a consulting firm for the semiconductor industry from January 1996 to the present. From January 2001 to December 2002, Mr. Ditmore served as a contract executive as President and Chief Operating Officer of Tru-Si Technologies, Inc. an equipment provider for the semiconductor industry. From August 1998 to August 2000, Mr. Ditmore served as a contract executive as Vice President and General Manager of the Customer Support Business Group of Lam Research Corporation, an equipment provider for the semiconductor industry. Mr. Ditmore was a senior executive at Applied Materials, Inc. from 1979 through the end of 1996, during which time he held numerous executive positions including Vice President and General Manager of the Customer Service Division from 1982 to 1992 and President of Applied Materials North America from 1992 through 1994. Mr. Ditmore serves on the board of directors of two corporations, Aviza Technology, Inc. a publicly traded company, and Structural Integrity Associates, Inc. an employee owned company. Mr. Ditmore also serves on the boards of directors of a number of non-profit community service organizations. Mr. Ditmore received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Roy Okuda was born in Hilo, Hawaii and received his B.A. in Chemistry and Biology from UC San Diego. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Hawaii. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University, working in the Chemistry Department with Professor Koji Nakanishi. His first academic position was in the College of Pharmacy of the University of Rhode Island. Since 1990, he has been a faculty member of the Department of Chemistry of SJSU. His teaching assignments have been primarily in the organic chemistry division. He has mentored approximately 75 research students, ranging from high school students, undergraduates and graduate students. He has organized numerous regional and national conferences, and is currently organizing the 50th Anniversary Meeting of the American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP) in June 2009, as well as overseeing other activities related to the Golden Anniversary celebration. He served as President of ASP from 2006-2007. He was a member of the Intel ISEF 2001 Board and was also the Judging Chair for the Fair. Since 2001, he has been a member of the Synopsys Outreach Foundation. For Intel ISEF 2010, he is again serving as a member of the Intel ISEF 2001 Board and is also the Judging Chair for the Fair. Charles H Packer has practiced law in Silicon Valley for over 25 years, focusing his practice in the areas of strategic planning for high net worth individuals and families, through estate, gift and philanthropic tax planning. Chuck is involved with numerous other charitable, civic and professional organizations, and was selected as a Northern California Super Lawyer by Law & Politics and San Francisco magazines for 2006, 2007 and 2008. Chuck received his JD from Santa Clara University School of Law, a MBA from Santa Clara University Graduate School of Business, and a bachelor’s degree in social ecology from the University of California, Irvine. With no background in science, technology, engineering or math, Chuck resorts to asking his two middle-school aged children for help in programming his cell phone, MP3 player and VCR. Accordingly, he is an avid supporter of STEM education. Dr. Howard Peters is a 1962 graduate of Geneva College, Beaver Falls PA (& hometown of Joe Namath). He earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry at Stanford University in 1967 under the late Dr. Harry S. Mosher. After 12 years in industry first with The Dow Chemical Co. in Midland MI and then SRI International in Menlo Park, CA in high explosives research, he received his Juris Doctor in law from Santa Clara U. in 1978. He was first a chemical patent attorney with SYNTEX ("The Pill" and ALEVE) and then was in private patent law practice for 12 years with Phillips Moore Lempio & Finley LLP of San Francisco and Palo Alto. He was a cofounder of the boutique patent law firm, now Peters Verny LLP of Palo Alto, in 1996 and retired from active practice in 2007. He is a 47 year member of the ACS and has 31 years of service on the ACS Council (of 500). He was a co-founder of the ACS Division of Chemistry and the Law in 1983 (now celebrating its 25th anniversary). He received the 2007 ACS Henry Hill Award for advancing chemistry as a profession. From 2005-7, Howard served as a member of the ACS Board of Directors and was the unsuccessful candidate for ACS President-Elect in 2007. In April 2008, he received the annual Geneva College "Life G Award" to recognize community service and public outreach. He is the author of the ACS reference book, Understanding Chemical Patents, 2nd, 1991 and is currently working of the next update. Dr. Lynn Shannon first became involved in science fair as a high school student participating in the regional science fair and representing Santa Clara Valley at the International Science and Engineering Fair. After completing her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis, she started volunteering as a grand prize judge at the Santa Clara Valley Regional Science Fair and has been judging for over 21 years. She also started working with the board of directors and became an official member in 1993. In 1992, she began mentoring students for Intel ISEF and State Fair and accompanying them as they represented Santa Clara Valley at the International and California State Fairs and she has continued working with the Intel ISEF student representatives. In 1995 she was part of the original group that became the ISEF 2001 committee and they successfully hosted the Intel ISEF 2001 in San Jose. Through this effort, they created a legacy through the generosity of Synopsys for ongoing science support through the Synopsys Educational Outreach Board of which she is a board member. In addition to a science fair volunteer, she was a den leader and assistant packmaster/packmaster for local cub scouts for 7 years, the Loma Home and School vice president/president for 3 years, and the Measure A committee co-chairman. She helped start a local co-op preschool and she started the MathFax competitive teams for Loma Elementary School. John Swan is currently on the Board of Directors of the 2010 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Mr. Swan’s focus is to leverage his technical background and his 15 years of relevant public and private experience to bear on the 2010 fair to grow the global visibility of this fair and its strategic ties to Silicon Valley. John’s professional background includes the energy generation field, high technology and alternative energy. Mr. Swan has held board seats on the San Jose State University Foundation, NASA Ames Technology Commercialization Center, Intel 2010 International Science and Engineering Fair, and the Cupertino National Bank and Trust Advisory Board. John was Co-founder of a public-private consortium with the U.S. Department of Commerce to expand international high technology businesses. This consortium was the international initiative of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley. He represented the large Japanese Trading Company, Mitsui & Co in many high tech joint ventures between the US and Asian companies. He was a Founding member of the Bullis Charter School, the number one charter school in the state of California. This public/private endeavor is helping reinvent public education in the K-6 levels.
